of Physical/Mental Yoga and Let-Go Yoga

The Foundational 50-Hour Training in the FUNdamentals of Yoga gives you the tools, knowledge and insights necessary toward becoming a Leading Edge Practitioner and teacher of yoga. It also starts you down the path being a highly effective and efficient Yoga Therapist.

And even if you are not planning to be a yoga therapist, the more knowledge you have in that area, the more effective and valuable you can be as a classroom instructor.

After attending the 1-Day Professional Introduction to the DSL Method of Yoga/Bodywork Therapeutics, your next step is to participate in this 50-Hour program.

What You Will Discover:

Was Ida Rolf Right About Yoga?:
Ida Rolf, founder of Rofling® and a key figure in the development of therapeutic bodywork of many kinds, was early in her therapeutic career an advocate of yoga. I was, however, momentarily horrified when I read that she had eventually come to the conclusion that yoga was actually compressing the joints of its practitioners, and she no longer recommended yoga. This is apparently what led to the development of Rolf Movement® and other related innovations.

After initial, momentary resistance, I examined her possible points-of-view (she had passed on so I could not ask her), and realized she was right: many, if not most, people WERE — and still ARE — unknowingly compressing their joints while doing yoga. And this is directly contributing to the significant increase in yoga related injuries nationwide.

Many people are, in actuality, over-contracting their muscles, attempting to pull themselves deeper into their asana. This triggers, among other things, a stretch reflex that is counterproductive. It’s as if they’re treating their muscles like rubber bands, under the semi-myth of elasticity of muscles. (Only a very tiny component of muscle fiber is truly elastic. The rest of the muscle fiber has a very high tensile strength, and would be useless if there actually was any significant elasticity.)

Please see my article, Muscles Are Not Rubber Bands.

This unconscious over-contraction of muscles is one reason there have been so many short and long-term yoga related injuries in recent years. This fact provides a platform by which to examine how yoga is, in many cases, being practiced, and how it can be modified to prevent this problem. While looking at the structure of how postures work, we’ll also see how the Meditative Mind can be effectively integrated into the physical yoga process without making mental yoga — meditation — appear to be out of reach to the average person.

We will also look at the very important part fascia plays in posture and movement, and examine whether Ida Rolf’s (modern Rolfing as well as other systems like Myofascial Release) substantial emphasis on the fascia, rather than muscles, was and is justified. (HINT: Muscles and fascia are, for the most part, an integrated unit, and NOT really separate, and must be treated as such. Yet they have VERY different characteristics, and need to be treated in accordance with this differential reality.)

PLEASE BRING: An assortment of Pillows & Bolsters (especially small diameter ones), cushions, and/or blankets to be used as props for certain asana, and for sitting if you prefer the floor.
