It might, at first, seem too simple. But, once you begin to see clearly, to see how many of the systems and processes of the body converge in the muscle system, and the many things that result from chronic, excess muscle & nerve tension, then you will see how seemingly complex experiences or symptoms are, at base, and most often, the accumulation of many small events. … With the occasional BIG event (car accident, severe falls, etc.) thrown in.
Either way, whether a big or small event, one thing they ALL have in common is the accumulation of tiny groups of muscle fibers getting "facilitated," getting Stuck in the ON Position, so the muscular tensions can never turn off unless you do something specific — and sometimes drastic — to relax and let of them.
Problem, is there are VERY FEW therapists, physicians, teachers or trainers who really know the ins and outs of neuromuscular and myofascial tension. It is virtually ignored by most, and barely mentioned by others. And the few who you would think know the most, Yoga and Massage people, are … well, most of them are just scratching the surface of their potential to help people.
Too many therapists, teachers and trainers (including yoga teachers) are so focused on STRENGTHENING, or ACHIEVING the Perfect Posture, that they miss the fact that the so-called weakness is in many cases NOT because you are fundamentally weak, it is because the muscles are EXHAUSTED from being so tense all the time. Even those muscles that some think are atrophied are really only contraced so tightly they cannot function freely and easily.
The DSL EdgeWork System of Yoga/Bodywork Therapeutics can provide you with tools necessary to solve many of the above problems.
While it is in many cases inappropriate – mostly for legal reasons — for most yoga teachers or massage / bodywork therapists to aggressively provide overtly therapeutic interventions, there are many things that can be done that are not in the realm of diagnosis and treatment.
Many of the common problems of most people are quite similar, and are merely the result of *negative* habitual practices. Statistically, because of the way the human body is structured, and the common environment we all live in, the vast majority of people could do the very same basic stretches and exercises and get much, if not complete, resolution of many of their problems.
The same basic routine of Yoga Asana could solve 50 per cent of the problems of 50 per cent of The People.
And most of the time, the exceptions to these statistical probabilities can be compensated for by merely NOT practicing certain stretches and exercises.
A basic knowledge of these principles and a handful of observations of what certain people should NOT be doing allows a Yoga Teacher or Therapist to provide what many of their Clients and Students are looking for WITHOUT having to engage in diagnosis and treatment.
And the only *remedy* necessary is helping people Learn How to:
- FEEL
- RELAX
- LENGTHEN
- BALANCE &
- COORDINATE . . .
And last time I looked, muscle tension was not a disease. … Why? … Because Muscle Tension is what we all Use and Do all of the time to function normally in our day-to-day activities.
Calling Muscle Tension a *disease* would be an Absurdity.
But teaching people a Basic Routine that the vast majority of human beings should be doing anyway just as a matter of course, for day-to-day maintenance, can not be diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions.
It is not practicing medicine or physical therapy to be addressing the Human BodyMind the way it should be by most, if not all, people at all times.
