NOT the Same Old Stuff in New Clothes!

Here’s the thing. … Go to any bookstore and pick any book or magazine on yoga off the shelf. What do you find?

Well, for the most part, with a few important exceptions, you find … the same basic stuff. It’s just written in a little bit different or better or more complicated way. Or the models are better looking.

OR … you find a whole lot of articles on everything EXCEPT … Yoga.

Don’t get me wrong. Yoga is great stuff. And anything that gets more yoga into the hands of more people is important and beneficial. That growing list of books on yoga just goes to show that people are finally starting to figure it out. They are realizing that everyone could, and most people should, be doing yoga, and will get great benefits out of it.

And if a magazine does not have enough material specifically on yoga to fill it’s pages, I understand that they have to write about SOMETHING, or they have to go out of business.

But how often do you read something that is TRULY different about the practice and teaching of yoga? Something that not just reaffirms what you already know, not just something that gives you a little different way of looking at things, not just a restatement of traditional teachings, but something that is VERY different than what you’ve always read or been taught about yoga?

ANSWER: Probably not very often.

Yes, there are great books out there describing an individual’s personal and inspiring story of how they got to yoga, and how it helped them, now it changed their life, or maybe even saved their life.

But Let’s Be Honest: Most of what’s out there is a clarification or retelling of the same basic material or story.

Clearing Up Many Myth-Conceptions

And you know what? … I know I’m going to get into trouble for this with someone, but so much of what I read is, in my experience and opinion, not quite accurate. In fact, a significant amount of it is downright WRONG.

I know, I know. Everyone’s perspective is valid. We need to respect their truth, even if it is different than ours.

But you know what? Anatomy is Anatomy. The abdominal or hamstring muscles ARE where they ARE, and that’s it. In normal bodies, they don’t move around or change shape from person to person or based on their or your or my preferred or imagined perceptions. And when someone says something that just is not true about how the physical body works, or how its put together, I’m sorry, but that needs to be addressed and, if possible, corrected. And to be honest, there is a LOT in the yoga world that needs to be addressed and corrected.

So one of the first things you’ll notice about this website is we cover a lot of Myth-Conceptions about how the body and mind work, and how yoga interacts with the bodymind.

Here are some of the Myth-Conceptions we’ll be working with and exploring:

  • Why strong AB-dominal and Back muscles are NOT necessarily a primary source of good posture or function
  • Why muscles are NOT elastic, nor do they truly “stretch” in the true sense of the word
  • Why your PRIMARY objective in asana is NOT to bend the body
  • How (probably) most yoga actually compresses the joints … NOT good!
  • Why so-called Proper Asana Alignment is not all its cracked up to be
  • How the excess emphasis on strength often misses the biggest beneifts of yoga
  • Why Sun Salutation is NOT a good warm up, and often dangerous
  • Why muscles are not Yin, nor are they Yang, but they’re BOTH
  • Why connective tissue (or fascia) is, for most people, NOT the Big Problem
  • Why you cannot “place” or “train” your body into so-called Proper Posture with your mind
  • How the usual approaches to warming up can deprive you of positive results
  • How so-called warming up might actually NOT protect you from injury
  • How the majority of instuctions on yoga postures are missing a VITAL ingredient
  • Why so much yoga teaching has a BIG potential to injure people

The Traditional Approach:

Most yoga teaching out there starts by showing people a small or large bunch of postures over short or long period of time. Then, they are encouraged to start doing these postures on a more regular basis for longer periods of time. Then, over time, the postures are gradually explained as to their significance or structure, according to, usually, a story from traditional yogic philosophy. Then when certain physical or mental issues come up, someone, usually from a list in a book, chooses among that list of postures what we should do to solve that particular issue, based on traditional, and often ancient, yogic lore.

We are told that these tried and true traditional postures, handed down to us from antiquity, are the solutions to many things.

Well, it IS true. Many of those postures WILL help for a lot of things. Sometimes they will help certain people a LOT.

But to tell the truth, after so many years of working with people in the therapy room (many of them yoga practitioners or teachers), and seeing how they hurt themselves, or at best, got far less value and results than they could have, I literally cringe the way I see so many yoga postures being taught now-a-days.

Or when I see so-called “beginner” postures taught to people who are NO WHERE NEAR ready to do those things. Or otherwise simple postures being taught in a way that is GOING to hurt some people, some of the time.

The DSL Approach to Yoga:
How Physical/Mental Yoga & Let-Go Yoga Work

We start with an objective that the Student or Client has. … Then we use scientific principles to see what has to happen in the body to achieve those objectives.  … Then we use physics combined with anatomy and kinesiology to figure out which direction the body has to move to achieve that objectivce. … Then we use physiological sciences to understand how best the Student or Client must utilize those movements to get where they want to go. … And we use the sciences of body-mind integration to help them use their mind and breathing to accelerate or maximize the process.

This way, you get a deeper understanding – from the Ground Up and the Inside Out – of how it all works. You’ll be more able to assess how particular movements will affect your Student’s or Client’s unique body. You’ll be more able to create more relevant asana and asana series for them to do. You’ll be more able to help your Student or Client get more results, more efficiently and effectively, and faster. THEN, it’s about . . .
