Physical/Mental Yoga

The Merging of Hatha (the physical)
with Jnana (the mental) Yoga

It is often asked, can you merge this or that kind of meditation with the physical exercises of hatha yoga? LIke, do Vipasana or T.M. while doing the physical postures of hatha yoga? (Here I use the term hatha in a broad sense, meaning all those that use physical asana in their practice.)

Even Krishnamurti, whom seemed to be a pretty accomplished meditator, did not seem to make much of an inherent connection between the two. Yet it could be argued he missed a critical element of the very thing he was teaching all his life. That being that meditation, as he spoke of it, was an integral part of life itself, rather than some sideshow you had to make happen, and it was a marvel that we human beings had somehow managed to relegate it to apparent disuse.

On the other hand, if you ever studied with Joel Kramer, the question would be reversed: How can you REALLY do physical yoga without engaging mental yoga at the same time?

And this is not about trying to get into some kind of meditative state while doing physical yoga. That would be counterproductive. This is about discovering that the mind-body connection is already there, and you don’t have to do anything to make it happen. You just have to pay attention to what’s already there, what’s already right before your senses.
