Short Summary of DSL

The DSL Method of Let-Go Yoga
is based on these ideas:

1. It is largely unrecognized that Chronic, Excess Muscle & Nerve Tension (C.E.M.&.N.T.) leads to a wide range of physical, mental and emotional problems and illness for many Human Beings.

2. Muscle & Nerve Tension is a Prime Nexus between our past, our present, and our future, and our inner and outer reality; and is the main focus of energy and action in Physical Yoga Asana.

3. Too many approaches to Exercise, as well as certain approaches to Yoga, are unconsciously and slowly (sometimes quickly) INCREASING our Muscle & Nerve Tension by excessively contracting and shortening muscles. Improper Structural and Postural Dynamics are very often applied, further exacerbating the tension accumulation and stress on all BodyMind systems.

4. Accidents and other Trauma tend to cause or accelerate the accumulation of C.E.M.&.N.T., sometimes exponentially. In yoga and other exercise systems, attempting to place or push the body into so-called proper alignment, depth or intensity is far too common, and a prime source of injury. Too many yoga teachers actually intimidate or physically push their students into alleged proper posture.

5-A. Learning How to Let-Go of Muscle & Nerve Tension on a regular basis is critical to maintaining proper psycho-neuro-musculo-fascial and organ function, and is, depending on an individual’s unique circumstances and objectives, very often FAR MORE IMPORTANT than so-called strengthening, endurance and cardiovascular exercise.

5-B. Ideally, strength/endurance/cardio training is performed in balance with tension release techniques. However, when a certain level — different for each individual — of tension, structural compression and mental or physical stress is reached, the balance MUST move toward tension release techniques and attitudes, sometimes to the extreme, until the system is re-balanced and normalized. (Normal meaning a minimum of chronic, excess muscle & nerve tension while maintaining the integrity and metabolic function of the body.)

6. Learning How to Let Go of Psycho-Neuro-Muscular Tension and achieve deep psycho-muscular relaxation is best achieved with Micro-Doses or Low-Doses of input to the system. (This can also be called Conscious Stretching.) Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Kung and other Low- or Lower-Dose techniques — with a focus on relaxation and lengthening rather than tension and contraction — can contribute to this process. Although for extreme healing situations, focusing exclusively on a range of low-intensity processes, in a balanced and coordinated fashion, is ideal.

7. Low-Dose Therapies decrease Sympathetic Overload & Stress and activate the Parasympathetic nervous system which is the prime mechanism of Self-Healing and Maintenance of the BodyMind.

8. Once a proper sensory-motor foundation has been established, THEN strength, endurance and cardio training can be resumed or pursued. However, regular and frequent attention should be invested into the Tension Reduction Process as a life-long pursuit.

9. Proper Physical Yoga cannot be done with full Effectiveness & Efficiency without an effective exertion of the aware mind into an asana and overall Yogic practices. ANY exercise system will benefit significantly with a similar investment of Aware Mindfulness.

10. The vast majority of significant problems with Posture, Pain & Dysfunction can be better resolved by assisting a Client in learning how to Feel, Relax, Lengthen, Balance, Coordinate & Control their Psycho-Neuro-Muscular System, rather than strengthening, stimulation techniques, or drugs.

11. Many apparently pervasive and complex illnesses will clear up on their own — without chasing individual symptoms — by a reduction of Generalized Sympathetic Overload (nerve tension) emanating from the Tonus System in the Old Brain.

12. Overall, as the internal psycho-physical resistances subside, an opening and expansion of the Self into interpersonal, transpersonal and social Awareness & Action will very often spontaneously evolve.
